Ystrad Mynach is a town in the County Borough of Caerphilly, previously within the ancient traditional county of Glamorgan, Wales, and is 5 miles north of Caerphilly town. Prior to the establishment of Holy Trinity Church, the only place in Ystrad Mynach where Anglican worship took place was in a small private chapel in Ystrad Fawr, attended by members of the Thomas family and estate staff. The Reverend George Thomas conducted the services.

On the 10th of August 1855, construction of Holy Trinity Church began with the laying of a foundation stone by George William Griffiths Thomas. The members of the Thomas family, Mr & Mrs Crawshay of Cyfartha Castle and the Bishop of Llandaff Alfred Ollivant, attended this event along with many other prominent members of society.

The reverend George Thomas met the cost of construction, which was reported to be 3700! The Church was consecrated on the 1st June 1857.

The Architect of the Church, in its origional form was John Norton who was a graduate of the University of London and won it’s First Prize, which was presented by Lord Brougham. He was a fellow in the Royal Institute of British Architects and became President of the Architectural Association. Norton was also an exhibitor at the Royal Academy.

Sometime between its opening and 1880, a fire in the Church tower destroyed the first set of bells and damaged the tall spire shown in drawings and early photographs. A second set of bells were installed and the tower changed to its present form.

In 1890 the Church Commissioners petitioned for the creation of the Parish of Ystrad Mynach which was created by order in council held in Windsor Castle when an ecclesiastical district was assigned to Ystrad Mynach.

The church was significantly enlarged in 1906 to accommodate increasing worshipping numbers, and has remained essentially in its present form ever since.
