Yeadon, there are scant indications about the first people to settle in thearea we now know as Yeadon. Only a few chance finds mark their passing. The place-name is probably derived from two Old English words (the language spoken by the Anglo-Saxons) meaning high hill. Later Viking settlers clearly didnt understand this. They called the highest point in the area Yeadon Haw. Haw in this sense is derived from a Viking word haugr which also means hill. Therefore in modern English Yeadon Haw would have the confusing name of the high hill hill!

Domesday, although little information is given, the first record of Yeadon occurs in the Domesday Survey compiled for William the Conqueror in 1086. Iadun, as the mane is spelled in Domesday, belonged to two Anglo-Saxon noblemen called Gluniairnn and Gamall. They each had 2 carucates of taxable land: a carucate was theoretically 120 acres (48.5 ha.) but in practice the size varied from place to place so we cannot be sure how much land Gamall and Gluniairnn were being assessed on. In any case this can not be all the cultivated land in the township. At the time it also included Esholt as well as the two medieval hamlets of Upper and Nether Yeadon. However, Domesday is basically a tax document and if no revenue could be raised on the remaining land, it would be of no interest to the compilers of the survey.
