Wincanton is a small town in Somerset that lies on the main A303 trunk road running from Basingstoke in Hampshire to Honiton in Devon. The town has some light industry and is the original home of Wincanton PLC, Europe’s second largest logistics company. The town is also home to North Downs Dairy, the producers of Pilgrims Choice Cheddar. Wincanton is also famous for its racecourse, which won the Small Racecourse of the Year award in 2007. In the 17th century the town was the site of the first skirmish in the Civil War, which removed King James II from power, effectively ending Catholic rule, absolute power of the Monarchy and establishing Parliamentary power in England. The town centre is picturesque and has an old world feel to it, being centred on the Market Square. There are many fine walks to be had in the area as well as a number of cycling opportunities. The Wessex CTC organises regular cycling runs taking in the breathtaking scenery of the Blackmore Vale. There is a great choice of pubs and inns in Wincanton, including The Millers Inn, The Bear Inn, The Nog Inn, The Red Lion Inn, Uncle Tom’s Cabin and The White Horse Hotel.
Today Wincanton is a pretty village in Somerset but it was once an important market town. It was once called wincawel tun. The word wincawel is Celtic and means white cawel (cawel being the original name of the River Cale. Perhaps the water once rushed past and looked white.)
A the time of the Domesday Book in 1086 Wincanton was a typical village but it soon grew into a larger and more important settlement. In 1235 the Lord of the Manor was granted the right to hold weekly markets in Wincanton. By the middle of the 14th century it was a flourishing town. From 1556 Wincanton was also allowed two fairs. (Fairs were like markets but they were held only once a year and they attracted buyers and sellers from a wide area. People came from all over Somerset and Dorset to attend a Wincanton fair).
Like many Somerset towns Wincanton prospered because of the wool industry. Cloth was woven in the town.
In 1685 the Duke of Monmouth led a rebellion in southwest England against King James II. The rebellion was crushed. Afterwards 6 men were hanged, drawn and quartered in Wincanton.
