Whiston – Back in the 11th century South Lancashire was divided into six districts of which a town in the North of England close to St Helens and Prescot was to become well known. In those early days it was referred to as Quitstan and its name evolved over the years to the town we know today as Whiston. A rural location Whiston was in its early years a centre of agricultural trade, and it wasnt until the early 16th century that coal was first mined in the area. There were a number of mineshafts sunk in and around the area however by the late 1800s these had all but closed. The mid 19th century saw the Liverpool to Manchester railway line constructed which meant that the transportation of raw materials and goods was made more effective. Whiston Colliery which had closed around the late 1800s was, in 1898, re-opened as a brickworks making bricks from local clay and shale and successfully trading through until the early 1970s. The early 1900s saw Cronton Colliery commence and coal was first brought to the surface in 1915 with production continued until1984 when it was closed. Today this 42 hectare site which lay derelict for a number of years is now being restored to a country park by The Land Restoration Trust. Today Whiston benefits from good transport connections by road and rail with the railway station offering easy access to Manchester and Liverpool whilst the motorway network offers access to the M62 and the M57.
Whiston is a large village and civil parish within the Metropolitan Borough of Knowsley on Merseyside, England. At the 2001 Census the population was recorded as 13,629.It is located within the greater Liverpool Urban Area.
Historically a part of Lancashire, it was known for its coal mines. Its recorded history begins in the 13th century but its roots are much older.
