Awarded a market charter in 1312, Sedgefield dates back to the tenth century, when it was occupied by Normans, but has its roots in Roman times. The Boldon Book records 20 villeins (peasants) holding land on the manor. Known in the 10th and 11th centuries as Ceddesfeld, a name reflected in the former Georgian rectory now home to Sedgefield Community Association, the village has also been called Seggefeld, Segesfeld and Sedgfield, names deriving from the sedges or rushes which grew in the area.
The parish church dedicated to St. Edmund dates from the 13th century, its lofty tower added in the 15th century by Robert Rodes. In times past, at 8pm in winter and 9pm in summer, a curfew bell would ring, followed by a number of tolls to signify the date. The 18th century legend of the Pickled Parson tells of the unfortunate rector who died just before the village tithes were due. Not wishing to miss out on the goods due to them, his inventive wife pickled him in brine and propped him up in the window for all to see. As well as having the only racecourse in County Durham, Sedgefield has its own ancient Shrove Tuesday Ball Game. Originally played by farmers and tradesmen, the game has no teams, very few rules and a pitch which takes in the whole of the village centre.
During the 18th century, Sedgefield stood on the Turnpike Road from Durham to Stockton, with the turnpike in place until 1857. The Hardwick Arms still has the arched entrance for coaches to pass through and Hardwick Hall, now a hotel, formerly home to gentry, boasted its own tree lined drive. At the other end of the social spectrum, Sedgefields first workhouse was replaced in 1861 by Ivy House, now demolished to make way for housing. Winterton Hospital, opened in 1858 and originally known as Durham County Lunatic Asylum, suffered the same fate.
