Biddulph is a town in Staffordshire, north of Stoke-on-Trent and south east of Congleton, Cheshire. The Biddulph Valley lends itself very well to a chronological telling of history in England. Although it has not been the centre of events, it has played its part in the dramas that have affected the development of the country. The Valley was formed about three hundred million years ago and was once under a warm tropical sea which is why we have the sandstone now. Coal measures were formed from the tropical forests which grew millions of years ago. Glaciers produced finer sand and clay. In the nineteenth century people used all these materials in manufacturing, and Biddulph became an important industrial centre as a result.
The first visitors, around five thousand years ago, made a burial ground now called The Bridestones to bury their chief. The Anglo Saxons came and settled, and gave the area its name. The Viking raiders travelled from the Liverpool area and burnt down the church, raided the Bridestones, and then settled long enough to name Knypersley – the rocky meadow. Hardly had the locals got over these raids than the Normans arrived and laid the valley to waste in order to prevent it being used as an area for resistance leaders to hide. A motte and bailey castle was built here – long since destroyed, but it gave its name to Baileys Bank.
The valley was divided up and the manors took on the names of Biddulph, Overton, Knypersley and Nether Biddulph (where Gillow Heath is to be found now). The coats of arms of these families have become the badges for the local schools. How relevant are they if the children wearing them dont know what they mean? Men went from Biddulph to the Crusades – bringing back, according to legend, Saracen slaves, who inhabited Biddulph Moor. The Civil War brought more soldiers to the Valley to lay siege on Biddulph Hall.
