Berkshire is a place or mystery, myth and legend. The county abounds with strange tales of ghostly phantoms, ferocious creatures, kings & knights, witchcraft, treasure and more. In the early 19th century, the age-old custom of electing the Mayor of Bartlemas on Mace Monday (the first Monday after 25/26 July), was still observed in Newbury. After the election at the Bull and Dog Inn, a dinner of bacon and beans was served. Afterwards, a cabbage stalk on a pole was paraded in the Mayoral Procession. Until 1883, a type of cake special to Berkshire was sold at the Clementide sheep fair in Lambourn on St. Clement’s Day, 23rd November. Made from special dough, with butter, currants, spice, candied peel and sugar, the cakes could be plate-sized and cost up to 5 shillings. The Clementide Celebrations were popular on the Downs as St. Clement was the patron saint of blacksmiths and was thus associated with Wayland the Smith who was said to have lived up on the Ridgeway. At Cumnor on Christmas day afternoon, parishioners were traditionally entertained at the vicarage, with ale and beer brewed from four bushels of malt, bread made from two bushels of wheat and over 25 kgs. of cheese.
King Edward & the Woodcutter, Old Windsor, Berkshire,A woodcutter who went to sleep in the Forest of Bruelle was horrified, on waking, to find that he had been stricken blind. He suffered long in his affliction, until in a dream he was directed to offer prayer in eighty-seven churches. This he did and, at the end of his pilgrimage, he went to (Old) Windsor, where he sat in the King’s porch. King Edward the Confessor, hearing of the man’s trouble and of his dream, sent for him and placed his hand, dipped in holy water, upon the blind man’s eyes. Immediately the woodcutter’s sight was restored. Herne the Hunter, Windsor Forest, Berkshire, Herne was the favourite huntsman of Richard the Second. Mortally wounded while saving his master from a stag at bay, he was miraculously cured by a stranger, who tied the antlers of a dead stag to the dying man’s brow. He claimed in payment all Herne’s skill in venery. Crazed by the loss of that skill in the craft he loved, Herne fled to the forest, where a pedlar found his horned corpse hanging from an oak. But every night he returned at the head of a spectral hunt to harry the Windsor game as of old.
The Duke of Chandos gains a Wife at a Newbury Inn, Lord Omery remarked, on 15th January 1745, “Of her person & character people speak variously, but all agree that both are very bad. ” He was speaking of Anne, Duchess of Chandos. She was the daughter of one John Wells of Newbury (& St. Marylebone) whose arms appear as azure, three fountains proper, on her hatchment at Keynsham Church. She was chambermaid at the Pelican Inn, Newbury, and married to Jeffries the Ostler there. There is a story about the Duchess told by an old lady of Newbury, who was ten years old at the time. Henry Bridges, 2nd Duke of Chandos, while on his way to London, dined at the Pelican Inn in Newbury, with a companion (it has been claimed that the Inn was the Marlborough Castle, but this is incorrect). After dinner there was a stir and a bustle in the Inn Yard. The explanation came that “A man is going to sell his wife and they are leading her up the yard with a halter round her neck”. “We will go and see the sale, ” said the Duke. On entering the yard, however, he was so smitten with the woman’s beauty and the patient way she waited to be set free from her ill-conditioned husband, the Inn’s ostler, that he bought her himself. She was his mistress for some years. In August 1738 his wife died, and by 1744 the ostler was dead also, and the two were finally married at Mr. Keith’s Chapel, Mayfair on 25th December 1744.
