Barnoldswick is another town steeped in history. Barnoldswick can trace its history back to the Vikings. Barnoldswick was known as Bernulfsuuic in the Doomsday Book. In 1147 a monastery was founded here by Cistercian monks from Fountains Abbey, but the locals didn’t take too kindly them so they moved on to Kirkstall where they built an abbey. The monks did leave behind some trace though. About 10 years after their removal they built the church of St Mary-le-Gill about a mile from Barnoldswick center. Apparently they built it so far away because of their altercation with the locals. An old mill town that is now home to many companies; Rolls Royce and Silentnight (actually in Salterforth) being its most famous.
On 17th March 1997, Pendle Council made Barnoldswick town center a Conservation Area (including Manchester Road, Westgate and Town Head), thereby formally acknowledging its special qualities and heritage value.
Barnoldswick is one of the longest place names in the UK without repeating any letters. Buckfastleigh in Devon, Buslingthorpe in Leeds, West Yorkshire and Buslingthorpe in Lincolnshire are longer with 13 letters.
The Bancroft Mill Engine – The last of 13 mills built in Barnoldswick in 1920. It closed as a “working” mill in 1978, but re-opened in 1982 as a tourist attraction. It is powered by a 600 horsepower cross-compound machine with a rope drive and has a 120 foot (36.5m) chimney. Demonstrations of weaving are carried out regularly.
Barnoldswick dates back to Anglo Saxon times. It was listed in Domesday Book as Bernulfsuuic, to mean Bernulf’s Town (uuic being an archaic spelling of wick, meaning settlement, in particular, a dairy farm.)
For hundreds of years Barnoldswick remained a small village however after the arrival of the Leeds & Liverpool Canal, and later the (now closed) railway, spurred the development of the existing woollen industry, and helped it to become a major cotton town. The engine of the last mill to be built in Barnoldswick, Bancroft Mill, has been preserved and is now open as a tourist attraction – a 600HP steam engine which still can operate.
