Banbridge Ireland is a quiet town in County Down, Northern Ireland. Its location on the site of a bridge crossing the river Bann gave it its name Ban-bridge. It has a rapidly growing population currently around 20,000. One of the reasons it is popular is its location. It is built next to the A1, the main route connecting Northern Ireland with the South. Furthermore, it is only 24 miles away from Belfast, an easy commute both by car and public transport. Many people working in Belfast live in Banbridge were housing is cheaper and the atmosphere more rural and rustic. It has a wide collection of bed and breakfast, guest houses, hotels, self-catering accommodation, restaurants and cafes, and even car rental companies.
Banbridge is a relatively recent town. It grew gradually as a stopping point on the main road from Belfast to Dublin at the crossing point of the river Bann. The bridge over the river was built in 1712. Its economy depended in part on the traffic between the islands two main cities, in part on farming. Gradually and by the late 1700s, Banbridge had become a leader in other areas, namely the linen industry. Two of the leading companies are still based in Banbridge. During the Troubles Banbridge escaped the worst of the violence and remained relatively quiet. Today the town remains a rural town compared to the larger urban centres of Belfast, Lurgan, Newry, Portdown all within 25 miles. Farming still forms a substantial part of the local economy, but services and the retail industry contributing a fair percentage.
The most distinguishing landmark of Banbridge is a bridge. Not the bridge over the river Bann, but a bridge through the middle of the town. The main street climbs over a steep hill which horse-drawn carriages found difficult to climb when loaded. Therefore, in 1834 an underpass was cut out of the hill following the direction of the main road, and a bridge built over it. The underpass is known by the locals as the Cut though officially known as “Downshire Bridge”. It was built by William Dargan, a famous Irish architect and father of railways on the island.
Banbridge has been the home of many important people. Three stand out. The first is Patrick Bront (1777-1861), father of the famous Bront sisters. The second was Joseph Scriven (1819-1886) whose family was from the village of Seapatrick just outside Banbridge. Joseph is best known for composing the famous hymn What a friend we have in Jesus loved and sung by Christian congregations the world over. The third person is captain Francis Crozier (1796-1848), British Naval officer who was a leading explorer in the Arctic and Antarctic areas. His statue is one of the landmarks of the town.
