Ballycastle, the Antrim town of Ballyclare has seen its share of invaders and incomers throughout the centuries, from Viking raiders through Norman conquerors (who left their mark in the form of mottes still to be seen thereabouts) to the Scots who arrived during the Plantation. These days those searching out the settlement are likely to be tourists, including travellers who arrive at nearby Larne on ferries from England and Scotland, and some who come from further afield tracing ancestors who emigrated from the town to America and Australia the families of Mark Twain and Sam Houston among them so its said. For tourists and commuters to Belfast alike Ballyclare offers a relaxed country setting ringed by forests and woodlands but only a short journey away from Northern Irelands capital. With a population just under the 9,000 mark it enjoys the amenities of a town on its broad main street, but none of the crush. Ballyclare has its own attractions too, architecturally in the form of the now unused 19th century market house, and culturally in its famous May Fair which dates back to the time of George II, one of the last horse fairs to survive in Britain and Ireland though these days its entertainment goes well beyond the equine. For those of a sporting bent there are several golf-courses within a matter of miles, and of course theres the traditional welcome in the hostelries.
Ballycastle is a small rural seaside town placed on the most north-easterly tip of county Antrim, Northern Ireland surrounded with breath-taking beauty and steeped in cultural history. Ballycastle is best known for the ‘Ould Lammas Fair’, probably the largest of its kind in Ireland with its ‘dulse’ and ‘yellowman’. Ballycastle is the perfect central location from which to organise day trips. Go west along the Causeway coast to Kinbane, Carrickarede Ropebridge, Ballintoy, Dunseverick, Portbraddon, the Giant’s Causeway, the Bushmills Distillery. Go east through the Glens of Antrim to Cushendall, Cushendun, Glenariff, Glenann, Glencorp, Glenballyeamon, Glendun, Glenarm. Go north to Mull of Kintyre, Fairhead, Murlough Bay, Rathlin Island to enjoy some true wildlife, fishing and diving or just enjoy the warmth of the town and its people. Ballycastle is the ideal holiday destination for the family or explorer with a variety of activities and accommodation to suit the weekend break or summer holiday.
Situated in the district of Moyle, Ballycastle is a traditional seaside town soaked in culture and set against a backdrop of forest parks, rivers, glens, mountains and spectacular coastline. There are two main attractions, the first is the seafront, with views as shown above it is easy to see why. Ballycastle seafront has views of Rathlin Island, Fairhead, Ballycastle beach, Kinbane Head and Mull of Kintyre along with the Marina, Bonamargy Friary, Golf course, Tennis courts, Bowling green, Margy river, various pubs, ice-cream parlours, amusements, restaurants, Hotels, B&Bs, Caravan sites and a Youth Hostel.
The second main attraction is the Diamond where folk festivals and other cultural events take place and perhaps most famously the 17th century ‘Ould Lammas Fair’ is held here annually on the last Monday and Tuesday of August. At the Lammas Fair you can sample the local specialities of ‘dulse’, an edible seaweed, and ‘yellow man’ a hard, sticky toffee.
Amongst other attractions are numerous pubs, one of which is well renowned for it’s cultural activities ‘The House of McDonnell’ named so because it’s owners are indeed descendants of the MacDonnells of Antrim. Nearby is the old Courthouse which is now Ballycastle Museum.
Ballycastle has not crowded streets filled with holidaymakers but rather a gentle trickle of locals and foreigners alike strolling along enjoying the peacefulness.
