Staveley is a neat village, very pleasantly situated, about four miles midway between Chesterfield and Bolsover, Co. Derby. It contains within its parish the chapelry of Barlow, the hamlets of Netherthorp and Woodthorp, with three of the name of Hundley, containing altogether about 408 houses. In Domesday Book, among the lands of Ascuit Musard, it is said that in the manor of "Stavelie, Hacon had four carucates of land to be taxed; land to four ploughs. Ascuit has now there, in the demesne, three ploughs, and twenty-one villanes ; and seven borders have four ploughs. There is a Priest and a Church; and one mill of five shillings and four pence. There are sixty acres of meadow ; wood pasture one mile and a half long, and as much broad. Value in King Edward's time, and now, six pounds."

In the reign of Edward I, the manor of Staveley belonged to John Musard. Issue male failing in his successor, N. Musard, the eldest sister of the latter conveyed it by marriage to T. Freschville, a branch of that family who were Barons of Crich in the reign of Henry III, and came Over with the Conqueror from a place of that name in Normandy. The area has been inhabited since around 4000 BC (evidence of which can be seen close to High Borrans) when Celtic speaking Britons established farms. The Romans arrived in 90 AD building a road that passed to the south of where the village is now, linking Kendal to their main fort at Ambleside. Gowan beck comes in to the village from the west after passing through the village of Ings. It is difficult to determine where the river got its name. In Scottish, gowan the name for the common daisy or occasionally the buttercup. In Gaelic Gowen/Gowan can also mean "blacksmith". The name may therefore otherwise have come from the Scots Gaelic or from Irish missionaries who are known to have travelled in Cumbria during the Anglo-Saxon period and have given many words to the local dialect.

Staveley was once at the heart of a local bobbin industry, with five mills operating in the Kent and Gowan valleys. Bobbins in the thousands were needed by the cotton mills of Lancashire to wind the spun yarn onto. Staveley Mill, a former bobbin mill and wood turning mill, now houses a number of workshops and small businesses. Kentmere contains the remains of a once prosperous enterprise based on the extraction of diatomite, a rare mineral found only in this small area. Diatomite is made up of the siliceous skeletons of diatoms (microscopic plants) that collected in a shallow lake (Kentmere Tarn). The mineral was dredged from the lake bed, taken by aerial ropeway to be drained and then dried in a kiln. It was used as a filter, absorbent and clarifier in many industrial processes. Kentmere Tarn, the works and the aerial ropeway can still be seen. Excavations uncovered two Viking boats in the lake; one of which is in Kendal Museum, the other in the National Maritime Museum in London.
