Lanarkshire is situated in the heart of Scotland's central belt, the area offers an ideal combination of tranquil parks and market towns within a stone's throw of the city lights of Glasgow and Edinburgh. This region includes Greater Glasgow and the Clyde Valley. A vibrant and energetic city, Glasgow is both cosmopolitan and Scottish in identity. It offers the visitor a broad spectrum of pleasure to enjoy. This is particularly true of the city's arts scene. Over 200 arts organisations, including Scottish Ballet and Scottish Opera, are based here in Glasgow, creating the cutting-edge productions and attracting high-profile exhibitions that led to the city being proudly crowned as a European City of Culture. Glasgow was also the UK's City of Architecture and Design in 1999, the architecture is art and attraction blended with functionality. Central Glasgow's impressive Victorian buildings, interspersed with those from the medieval to the present day present a unique vista. The Art Nouveau 'Glasgow Style' has made this city become famous; the work of Glasgow's most celebrated architect and designer Charles Rennie Mackintosh was a master of his craft and it shows.

The surrounding areas of Glasgow offer some of the best of Scotland's scenery, from the rolling hills of the Clyde Valley to the beautiful walking country of East Dunbartonshire that borders the south-west Highlands. There are so many attractions here, including the Falls of Clyde, Strathclyde Park, Scottish Wildlife Reserves on the shores of the River Clyde and numerous country parks, and heritage centres. Perhaps the most stunning is the New Lanark World Heritage Site. Famous as a beauty spot and for the work of the world-famous mill owner Robert Owen, this unique 18th century cotton mill village has been carefully restored as a living community, and is now an official UNESCO World Heritage Site with an award-winning Visitor Centre and Hotel. Highlights include a magical futuristic dark ride called the New Millennium Experience and a theatre show called Annie McLeod's Story, where ghosts from the days of Robert Owen appear on stage to tell their story. Other attractions include the restored Millworkers' House, Robert Owen's House, 1930s period store, working textile machinery, the Historic Classroom and Saving New Lanark exhibition, as well as a new interactive play area for children. There is the opportunity to shop in the Gift Shop and Owen's Warehouse, one of the largest Edinburgh Woollen Mill stores in Scotland. The village is surrounded by native woodlands - now protected as the Falls of Clyde Wildlife Reserve. Here you can enjoy a gentle riverside walk and see the spectacular Corra Linn waterfall, where the Clyde falls over 30 metres to the valley floor.
