Ashbourne, gateway to Dovedale, is one of the most popular historic market towns in the Peak District. The town, which boasts spectacular Georgian architecture and historic buildings including the beautiful St Oswald's Church with its tall spire, is a hub for fine specialist shops, independent boutiques, antique shops and fine food shops. Regular weekly markets in Ashbourne take place in the historic Market Place on Thursdays and Saturdays whilst Ashbourne events include the famous Shrovetide Ashbourne Football Game and the summer Ashbourne Arts Festival. A main centre in the gentle southern Derbyshire Dales, some of the Peak District's most visited attractions and walking trails are within easy reach of Ashbourne including the spectacular Dovedale valley and stepping stones and Ilam Hall and Park, both of which are cared for by the National Trust. The former historic railway line, now the Tissington Trail also stretches down to Ashbourne. The town is served by direct bus links from Derby (Trent Barton) and is ideally situated for easy access to top Staffordshire family attractions like Alton Towers theme park to the south.

Peak District beauty spot Dovedale is just to the northwest of Ashbourne. The gentle three mile stroll through the Dovedale gorge with its spectacular rock formations, caves and famous Stepping Stones across the River Dove remains one of the highlight walks in the Peak District National Park and essential visiting. The flat path through Dovedale is perfect for families and Dovedale is easily reached from Ilam Park, Thorpe and Milldale.

Ashbourne is a popular holiday base in the southern Peak District and a major gateway into the southern White Peak areas, most of which are cared for by the National Trust, including Dovedale, Ilam, Thorpe and the Tissington Trail. A historic market town, receiving a charter in 1257, Ashbourne boomed during the Georgian period and much of its fine Georgian architecture survives in the town centre. Walk down any street in Ashbourne and a striking historic building will catch your eye, be it a character old coaching inn, 16th century grammer school or famous tombs in St Oswald's churchyard. A superb choice of traditional tearooms, real ale pubs and historic hotels and Ashbourne B&Bs with real charm all sit within Ashbourne's picture postcard centre. St Oswald's church in Ashbourne, dating from around 1340, with its tall spire standing 212 feet high is one of the most beautiful historic churches in the Peak District. The town was George Eliot's Oakbourne in her novel Adam Bede. The author thought St Oswald's one of the finest churches in England. Other famous people connected with Ashbourne include Charles Edward Stuart (Bonnie Prince Charlie) who proclaimed his father James King of England, Wales and Scotland here in Ashbourne in late 1745.

Specialist shops in Ashbourne include fine independent ladies boutiques, food shops, arts and crafts shops, art galleries and antique shops. The Ashbourne Arts Festival takes place annually in June over two weeks and attracts huge crowds. Other annual events in Ashbourne include the Ashbourne Highland Gathering (mid-July) and the famous Ashbourne Royal Shrovetide Football game event on Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday. This event, which has a great atmosphere and is one of the oldest Shrovetide football games still going, is similiar in style to the earliest football games played in streets and using hands to propel the ball. The goals, Sturton Mill and Clifton Mill, are several miles apart and the football is passed through the streets of Ashbourne by a large crowd.
